The spaceship on Willow was built in a studio of the course of a day and a half. Production Designer Mark Carchidi and Art Director Michael Groves did all of the math for the measurements, and we spent a lot of time in the Montclair State art studio making all of the parts. I learned how to use a drill during the preparation days, and after constructing the entirety of the space ship's room, we painted the inside. The ship had to have a makeover halfway through shooting for the later scenes in the movie where there is mars debris stick to the walls. We had a lot of people on our team so we were able to move quickly.
There was so much detail especially on the desk on the back wall of the ship. I was able to make my own mark on the set design by making "packs" out of duct tape and hanging them around the room (over the side computer, on the upper slanted walls, and next to the sleeping pods).
